Kindergarten Smooth Start

Our kindergarten students will come to school for a 2-hour session between September 5-7. You have signed up for a time and a reminder post card will be coming in the mail. September 10 and 11 will be a full day of kinder with only half of the students in the classroom to allow students to have a smoother start with students with a last name that starts with A-L on Monday and students with the last name of M-Z coming on Tuesday. Wednesday, September 12 will be the first day of kindergarten for all students together. This slower transition will allow students to become familiar with the routines and structures before they are all in the classroom together for the whole school day.

Open House

Our back-to-school open house will be held Tuesday, September 4th from 4:30 – 6:00 pm. This is a drop in event where students, and families, can tour the school, bring their school supplies, and meet the classroom teacher.

School Hours

Our school hours are 9:15am – 3:30pm. Front doors will open for breakfast at 8:50am and then at 9:00am for the main hallways. Onsite daycare is available before and after school through the Salem Child Development Center. You can contact them at 503-363-9821 for availability and prices.

Lunch and Recess Times

Kinder 11:15 – 11:55 am
1st & 2nd grade 11:45 – 12:25 pm
3rd & 4th grade 12:15 – 12:55 pm
5th grade & DLC 12:45 – 1:25 pm

Class Lists

Students who attended Kalapuya last year were able to meet their teacher during Moving-On Day last June. Class lists will still be posted at Kalapuya starting September 1st.
School Supply List
Our school supply list is on our school website. http://kalapuya.salemkeizer.net/ If your child is in need of supplies, let our school counselor, Colleen Friedrich, know as she has some donated items.

Our annual Jog-a-thon will be Friday, October 5th. This is our primary fundraiser for the upcoming school year. Funds raised will provide our students with field trips, assemblies, author visits, family events & classroom supplies. You can help in several ways: 1) Be a Company Sponsor ($250, $500, $1000) Logo on t-shirts, tax deductible. 2) Donate Prizes—gift cards, certificates, physical prizes, etc. These are tax deductible and every student is eligible to win. Sign-ups and more information will be available at the Open House and in the first day packets.

Car Drop Off in the Morning

If you are dropping students off between 8:50 and 9:10am, pull up along the red curb in front of the school (far right hand lane) and have your student(s) exit the vehicle on the passenger side. This ensures the student’s safety as they will not be walking in front of, or alongside, moving vehicles. The left two lanes may not be used to drop students off.

Pick Up After School

Your child’s safety is our number one priority. With almost 600 students enrolled in our school, it is very important that we have a structured and orderly process for dismissing students at the end of each school day. There will be three different locations that students will be escorted to at 3:30pm (Bus, Walk, Car). Students will be escorted to each location by a teacher from their grade level who will be carrying a sign for the location they will be walking to. If you have more than one child attending Kalapuya, once they get to their dismissal area, the older siblings can go and stand with the younger sibling(s) at the younger grade level area. If students have older siblings (from middle or high school) who are picking them up, they should not be on school property until school is dismissed at 3:30pm. This is a safety issue as we will not have anyone outside supervising them.

  1. Car Pick-Up (Front Parking Lot)
The front of the school is reserved for parents who are picking students up in their car. Simply pull into one of the three lanes in front of the school and a staff member will escort your student to your car. Parents are to remain in their vehicle. By remaining in your car, you will be helping maintain the flow of vehicles into and out of the parking lot while allowing the vehicles behind to advance forward.
** If you are driving to pick up your child and would like to get out of the car to meet them, you will need to park on Wilmington, or another side street, and walk to the playground where your child will be waiting. Please do not park in the front parking lot and then walk to get your student. This disrupts the flow of vehicles in the car pick up line.
  2. Walkers, Bike Riders, Parent Walking to Pick Up Student (Playground Area)
Students will be escorted to the back of the building by the playground. Once in that area, older siblings will be able to meet up with younger siblings and walk or ride their bike home, or wait for a parent to pick them up. Parents or siblings should not come onto the playground before 3:30 as school is still in session.
  3. Bus Riders/Salem Child Development Center Childcare (Cafeteria)
Students riding the bus will be escorted directly to the buses. Students who are attending Salem Child Development Center childcare will walk to the cafeteria.

Please feel free to call or e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to a great school year!
